Are you looking after yourself?

Are you looking after yourself?

Self-care is a concept we now hear often (though something many people neglect to do).  Self-care is taking the time to do things to improve your physical and mental wellbeing.  I often see new Mums exhausted from lack of sleep and trying to do it all.   It’s hard!!! We have 3 children and have been in those same trenches.  I see working Mums and parents who are juggling so many things with kids and sports and rarely have time for themselves.   Self-care is not selfish!  It’s about filling your cup so you can then give to others (just like on the airplanes, you are told to put your own oxygen mask on before putting them on others.)  Life now is so busy and hectic for so many!  It is so important to take time for you.  This helps create and maintain balance in your world. As a busy Mum of 3 and business owner, I too must take my own advice, and remind myself often.  Tips for self-care:

  • Drinking adequate water (see previous post).

  • Getting enough rest (and nap when you need to).  Blue light from devices and screens do make it harder to go to sleep, try reducing screens before bed.

  • Practice gratitude – Think of 3-5 things every day to be grateful for.  Write them down. Even do it as a family.

  • Exercise – make time to exercise (and do something you enjoy).  30 minutes of activity daily (which may even be going for a walk regularly) can improve physical and mental wellbeing.

  • Read a book for fun, or to educate yourself on something new.

  • Go outside – nature is therapeutic to the soul.

  • Have a relaxing bath – with magnesium salts and essential oils. (I do love a bath!)

  • Have a massage/facial/use a facemask.

  • Take a break from your phone, social media &/or technology.

  • Listen to a podcast or your favourite music.

  • Diffuse essential oils.

  • Try something new.  A new hobby, or skill.  Maybe just for fun!

  • Take time out – meditate, relax or just be.

Self-care is an investment in you.  It needs to be a priority.  It does help improve your overall wellbeing, allowing you to be the best version of you.
